For the Wallpaper/Cadillac 2016 collaboration, Christopher Stuart developed a design system using only developable surfaces; specifically "Single Curved Surfaces". The direction for this was based on the material chosen; burl veneer.

There are strengths and limitations to every material. With veneer, it works best when it is bent in only one direction. Think of how you can bend a piece of paper. It will wrinkle if forced to bend in two directions at once (compound curvature). Without any preconceived forms in mind, Christopher wanted to see what forms he could arrive at based on limiting himself to single curved surfaces only. So, in this case, the form is a result of the process and the process is a result of the material.

Although limited to single curvature, the final form is dynamic and full of visual motion; much like that of an exterior of an automobile. To accentuate this, the piece was sprayed with multiple coats of clear coat to create a finished piece that references the luxurious interiors of Cadillac. Formally, Christopher also wanted to take burl furniture from the minimalist geometry of the 70's to a maximalist geometry congruent with today's robust CAD software used in furniture design as well as the automotive industry.
